The Origin

We don’t just produce knitwear and accessories; we breathe life into fabric, create motion in movement, and structure through our stitching. Our knitwear has been coveted for centuries and is highly desired because of our extensive knowledge, updated technology, and business acumen. More importantly, our people strategy cares for the emotional and physical well-being of our employees whilst ensuring the development of a positive attitude.

1980Eskimo’s committed and diligent staff ensure an excellent experience for clients. The origin of the company, dates back to 1870 when the Merkel family, the ancestors of the present owners of Eskimo, set up a business to produce knitted gloves and socks near the town of Chemnitz in Saxony.

2000+Over the past hundred years, what started as a family business developed its core competence in knitwear and started manufacturing operations first in Europe then in Asia.
As a result, Eskimo Fashion Knitwear was incorporated in Sri Lanka in the year 1980. It was one of the earliest and most significant foreign investments in Sri Lanka and was launched at the beginning of the country's programme of economic liberalisation. Establishing Eskimo Fashion in Sri Lanka was one of many achievements in over 100 years of history. The story continues to progress today.
The plant was built on 90,000 square metres of land located near Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake originally with 200 employees. Having made a pioneering journey over the last three decades Eskimo Fashion Knitwear now comprises a modern and vertically integrated manufacturing operation with over 2,000 employees at three factories located in Negombo,Pallekele and Punanai.
